Dergelijke 'afena', of staatsiezwaarden, behoren toe aan de Asante dorpshoofden. Vaak zijn ze versierd met ornamenten die spreekwoorden voorstellen (zie Spring, 1993:57). Deze ontbreken hier echter. Er is een overeenkomst zichtbaar tussen deze zwaarden en islamitische, met name Turkse, bladen, hetgeen te verklaren valt door de aanwezigheid van islamitische handelaren uit de oude Sudanese koninkrijken al lang voor de stichting van het Asante koninkrijk. Gedurende de 17e eeuw werd het zwaard vervangen bij de introductie van het Europese musketgeweer. Het zwaard kreeg een bijzondere status als object dat de macht van de Asantahene, de koning, op zijn drager kon overbrengen. Op deze manier had het zwaard als machtssymbool een functie in het samenbrengen van verschillende volken in het Akan-koninkrijk, waarbij de culturele, militaire en politieke organisatie van de Asante de overhand had (Spring, 1993:56). De satelietstaten onder het bestuur van de Asantahene kregen elk een eigen staatsiezwaard als onderdeel van een soort acculturatieproces. |
