Description |
Nederlands: Gezichtsmasker in de vorm van een buffelkop met uitpuilende ogen, bestaande uit concentrische cirkels, driehoekige bek. De horens vormen een bijna gesloten ovaal en zijn zelf in doorsnee gezien, ellipsvormig. Achter de horens steken de oren omhoog; deze zijn smal en puntig.
Op de snuit en de zijkanten van de kop zijn in reliëf diagonaal lopende lijnen uitgesneden, zodat driehoekige en geometrische figuren ontstaan. Tussen de oren een ruitvormig reliëf uitgesneden. Onder de kop is een onbewerkte houten rand met geboorde gaten voor de aanhechting van een vezelkraag. Het masker diende waarschijnlijk als dansmasker, maar de literatuur is niet volkomen duidelijk over de functie en exact welke rol de maskers in de Samo gemeenschap innemen. Skougstad brengt Samo maskers in verband (vooral op grond van stijl) met de maskers van de Gurunsi en Bwa (1978: 15-23). Zie ter vergelijking fig. 10, 11 en 12. Echter, " the uses of masks among these groups is even less documented" (1978: 23). Fortes vermeldt dat maskers gebruikt worden door de meest zuidelijk gelegen groeperingen van de Samo (de zgn "maka"), deze maskers zouden echter vezelmaskers zijn (1967: 127). De Brochure Boven Volta schrijft in het kort: "The Samo belong to the ethnic group Mande. Their masks and statuettes have another artistic form compared to their neighbours and they are not well-known" (1982: p. 23) |
