Title
CLASP
Description
English:

An incomplete cast copper alloy zoomorphic clasp with decorative rigid integral plate, dating to c AD 1250 - 1400. An oval frame expands at the outer end of the clasp into a sub rectangular piece, convex U shape in section, which is the head of a beast, with broad nose or snout, cheeks, almond shape eyes with pronounced brow ridge, and, on the frame itself, moulded longitudinal ridges which represent the hair. On each side of the frame are moulded representations of pointed ears. The integral rectangular plate, also a convex U shape in section, is decorated wth a central spine-like low-rise ridge, extending from which are engraved oblique lines. A rivet hole is drilled into the item just behind the oval frame. The rivet is missing. It is possible that this is, in fact, a buckle. In which case this would be a pin hole.

It is reminiscent of a gape-mouth buckle but not entirely similar. Cf WILT-EE3EB2. The style of head is typical of a number of clasps which appear on this site. Cf PUBLIC-566794 and HESH-078801.

It is 44.13mm in length, 13.09mm in width, 6.40mm in height and weighs 5.94g
