En las llanuras del sur y sudeste, próximas a los cauces de los ríos Jarama, Henares y Manzanares, hay multitud de lagunas. Algunas son naturales y pueden secarse en verano; otras han sido rellenadas por las aguas subterráneas y se han formado como consecuencia de la extracción de áridos y gravas. La caliza madrileña se conoce como “caliza del páramo” y puede presentar diferentes colores o tonos. Se utiliza como piedra de construcción y para la obtención de cal Esas lagunas son de gran importancia ecológica ya que en sus márgenes crece la vegetación palustre (carrizos, juncos y espadañas), que sirve de refugio y descanso a muchas aves migratorias |
