White paper wrappers. The rectangular bookplate of Robin de Beaumont is on the upper pastedown. He has noted on the frontispiece recto: “[Book purchased from:] Donald Fraser 3.69 10 [shillings]” The illustration on page 65 is signed: H. Anelay [i.e. Henry Anelay] and “Henry Linton”. There is a paper slip tipped in at the front, giving details of other Partridge books. Stored in a sleeve, there are three other bookseller descriptions of other copies. The title page has the embossed stamp of “Sellick, Bookseller, Printer, Plymouth” within a garter border. The frontispiece is a tinted lithograph, and features the head and shoulders of nine young ladies. Both covers have rule borders, in red and in green, with plant motifs on each corner. The upper half of each cover has the title: “/ Language of the eye./ Illustrated by/ Gilbert and Anelay./ [at the base] by Joseph Turnley./ Author of Priestcraft and Henry 2nd./ Price one shilling/” The lower cover depicts three young ladies, finely dressed, with elaborate hair styling. The upper cover has the additional words: “ Female beauty and general character explained” and “Dedicated to the Earl of Ellesmere”. On the upper centre, is a young lady, elaborately dressed, holding a fan in front of the lower part of her face. The spine has: “The language of the eye. Price 1 [Shilling]” along its length. This book acquired with the generous assistance of the British Library Collections Trust.
