Notes

The device of Woodford, Fawcett & Co. is on the title page verso. Pages 1-79 are the text; pp. 81-138 are the trade catalogue printed by Perken, Son & Rayment. Robin de Beaumont’s full notes are on a separate paper slip. Pink endpapers and pastedowns, with Press Opinions printed on them. The upper pastedown has the circular ticket of: “/ J. Preston/ Late Cubly(?) & Preston/ 55 Fargate/ and/ 33 Church St./ Sheffield/”. The lower cover has an advertisement for: ““Optimus” Photographic Outfits, by Perken, Son & Rayment.” The upper cover is printed in colours. It shows to the left, a man, wearing green clothes and striped trousers and a cap. He is operating a searchlight, which projects a white circle in front of him. In the circle are the words: “/ Intensity/ Colis/ How Made &/ How Used/ also/ Electric Light/ Telephone/ Phonograph/ by/ “Dyer”, &c/” A red table is to the right of the man, with equipment stowed underneath it. At the head: “Seventeenth Edition. [Copyright]./ One Shilling./” At the tail: “/ Sold by all Opticians/ 1891./” This book acquired with the generous assistance of the British Library Collections Trust.
