Title
Description
Panel of roman mosaic found during excavations in Cordoba.
Depicted people

The mosaic depicts an actor in the role of a reciter declaiming the text of a tragedy.

Dressed in a short tunic and a cape, he wears a mask on his face which also serves as a megaphone. He is wearing cothurns, which were physically attached to the mosaic to give a sense of relief. He is looking for his way with the help of a stick in the manner of the blind: This may be a theatrical representation of Sophocles' Oedipus, a myth that was frequently depicted in sculptures and wall paintings of the period.
Depicted place The perspective is created by the skènè in the background of the composition. This building, with its four supports and flat roof, served as a stage; It is one of the oldest representations of a theatre.
Date between late 1st century and early 2nd century AD
Medium The richly coloured figure is a tessellation of red, blue-green and yellowish-pink glass pastes which contrast with a background of ochre tones in different grades of red lead. As was customary, it was to be surrounded by a decorative border of geometrical patterns which has not been preserved.
