Text Appearing Before Image:
Fig. 49. resting on a small lions back, a purely Italian feature. The tympanum, here too, seems out of place, as if it hadbelonged to a different doorhead. The figure of theMadonna is not in the middle, and the circle with theLamb on one side does not balance the long oval ordouble circle on the other containing the Sacrifice ofIsaac, and the story of Balaam. Above, as at S. Pietro, is a graceful arcade of littlearches or colonnettes, and in the wall over this, which is 224 TUSCANY (CH. XIV ToscanellaS. MariaMaggiore
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 50. i CH. xiv) TUSCANY 225 square and not gabled, is a magnificent rose window, this Toscaneiiatime a real wheel, with colonnettes for spokes, very far iviaggioTesuperior to that at S. Pietro. Against the south presbytery pier stands a remarkablepulpit or am bo of nth or 12th century work (Fig. 50),and in the north aisle is a fine early font.^^ Though deserted, these two remarkable churches arewell cared for ; and as they have been disused since themiddle ages they have fortunately escaped the alterationsand mutilations of Rococo and neo-classicism.K Toscaneiia has other points of interest. The churchof S. Maria delle Rose has features of antiquity; thetown walls, and gates, are very well preserved; and theRivellino, or castle of the Priors, is worth a visit. Thereare some Etruscan tombs in the neighbouring valley, butI did not see them. The beautiful city of Viterbo twelve miles away, viterbowhence Toscaneiia can be reached most conveniently, hasseveral early Romanesque churches
