Title
Button and loop fastener
Description
English: A Roman copper alloy button and loop fastener of Wild's Class III. The head is teardrop shaped and has a raised circular boss surrounded by a deep groove with traces of enamel. Within the boss, is a moulded cross (+), which would probably have originally held enamel. The loop fastener is set at a right angle to the back of the head then bends so that it is flat and parallel with the head. The loop is circular. The fastener measures 31.3mm in length and 18mm in width (across the head). The length of the head is 21.5mm. The fastener weighs 6.95g. Similar examples, but without the decoration within the boss, have been found at Castleford, West Yorkshire (Butterworth et al. 1998, 70 fig. 22, nos.233, 235 & 237).
