Summary
[edit]DescriptionBuddhas (India), Asian Art Museum (6001097854).jpg |
These two early Indian Buddhas - the left, a standing example from 200-350AD and the right, a sitting example from 300-500AD, both made of schist - are similar in look to Greco-Roman statues well known in the West. 19th Century British archaeologists arriving in their Indian colony were fascinated by these and many other similar statues in Gandhara. As they had considered Greco-Roman statues to be the pinnacle of ancient art, they were pleasantly surprised to see that India had "learned" from the Greco-Roman influences. (In fact, the influence may have been the other way around, or two-way.) |
