Notes | Gilt metal Buddha Taken by Captain C D Campbell, Indian Navy from the Dragon Pagoda at the capture of Rangoon, April, 1852. Charles Dugald Campbell, born in London (1814) joined the Indian Navy in 1828 at the age of 14. His service included periods spent in the Middle East and in India. He received several promotions becoming a Lieutenant in 1837 and a Commander in 1847, and a Captain in 1857. During the second Anglo-Burmese War (Anglo-Myanmar War) he was Commander of the "Sesostris". The expedition took the squadron to the Great Dragon Pagoda in Rangoon, Where Campbell acquired several 'souvenirs', and to Prome (now known as Pyay) where he made a copy of the Buddha's footprint. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
