Title |
buckle plate (back) |
||
Description |
English: Sheet copper alloy rectangular belt plate with two intact separate rivets at one end, to attach to the leather strap, and two hooks at the other end, which would have held the pin bar of the buckle frame, and allowed the loop of the pin to rotate between them. The hooks are worn and thinned, as is the edge of the plate, so it is difficult to be sure if they were recessed or not, but they appear to be flush with the edge of the plate. The surface of the plate is pitted but enough of it remains to say that it was undecorated.
Williams (2001) illustrates a similar plate on page 324, Fig.9, No.80, which is dated from the 14th to the early 15th century.
Egan & Pritchard (2002) illustrate a similar plate on pages 75-7, Figs. 45-6, Nos.308 & 315-6, which are dated from the 14th century.
Griffiths, Philpott & Egan (2007) illustrate a similar plate, but with four rivet holes, on page 107, Plate 18, No.831, which is dated to the Later Medieval period. |
