Buckle plate |

Description |
English: A copper-alloy medieval circa 13th century buckle plate, origianlly folded sheet but now only the front face survives. The plate is rectangular and measures 21.9mm in length and 20.1mm in width. The plate is recessed for the missing frame and has a rectangular pin slot. The front face has a border groove and a central decorative panel created by paring away the metal. There is a two legged beast depicted walking left with the head turned to look outwards. The beast has a squarish head and a long curled tail, it is bird or dragon like. It is similar to an example from London and other examples with birds dated to the 13th century (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 114, no 530). |
