Buckle plate |

Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy medieval circa 14th century folded sheet buckle plate, only the front face of which now survives as the back face is missing due to an old break, now worn. It is square in shape and measures 26mm by 26mm in size. There is a rectangular pin slot and two in situ rivets, one through each corner of the outer edge. Bothe of these rivets have copper-alloy circular sheet roves attached to their back faces. The front face of this plate is decorated, it has a border groove and within this there is a winged two-legged beast with a dragon like head and a fish like tail depicted in side profile. The metal has been pared away around this animal and there may originally have been enamel around it, although no trace of this remains. There is a trace of gilding around one of the rivets though.A very similar buckle plate with another dragon like beast on its front face has been found in London (Egan and Pritchard 1991 113-114, fig 73, no 530). |
