Notes Silver buckle that belonged to 22-99 Sister Edith Jane Austen, NZANS, WW1. Silver buckles like this were often given to nurses as graduation presents. However, Edith Austen graduated in 1904 and it is more likely that this buckle, hallmarked 1910, was a gift at the time of her enlistment with the NZ Army Nursing Service. Edith Jane Austen trained at Auckland Hospital, graduating in 1904. At the time of her enlistment with the NZ Army Nursing Service Edith gave her address as Morrinsville, New Zealand. She embarked upon Hospital Ship No 1 Maheno on 15 July 1915 bound for Egypt. Edith served on the hospital ships HS Maheno and HS Salta, and also nursed at Brockenhurst. (1916-1918). On her returned to New Zealand Sister Austen nursed shell-shocked soldiers at Rotorua Hospital and subsequently at Kamo, Whangarei.
