Afrikaans: Die term xaxim / boomvaring verwys na sekere boomagtige pteridofiete (vrugbare varings of varings), of selfs na hul stam, wat in klein segmente gesaag kan word om as 'n vaas vir ander plante te dien. In die Neotrope is Dicksonia sellowiana van die Dicksoniaceae-familie die bekendste van hierdie plantspesies. Dit is inheems aan Sentraal-Amerika, die Atlantiese Woud en die Amazonebekken (veral die state Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina en Rio Grande do Sul van Brasilië). Xaxim staan ook bekend as samambaiaçu, sambambaiaçu of samambaiaçu-imperial. Weens sy unieke aantreklikheid en praktiese nut het die aanwending van sy stam vir die bereiding van vase redelik algemeen geword, sowel as die gebruik daarvan in tuinbou en konstruksie-projekte. Die gier om boomvarings as 'n ondersteuning vir orgideë en bromelias te gebruik, het posgevat omdat dit baie goedkoper as 'n kleivaas is. Hierdie aktiwiteite het daartoe gelei dat die boomvaring op die lys van bedreigde spesies van die Brasiliaanse Instituut vir die Omgewing en Hernubare Natuurlike Hulpbronne (Ibama) geplaas is. Dit is omdat, benewens die onbeheersde benutting, die plante vinnig vrek wanneer hulle uit hul natuurlike habitat verwyder en op onvanpaste plekke geplant word, sodat die spesiebevolking uitgedun en die risiko van hul verdwyning verhoog word.
Português: O termo xaxim pode se referir a certas pteridófitas (avencas ou samambaias) arborescentes, ou ainda, ao tronco destas, o qual pode ser serrado em pequenos segmentos e usado de vaso para outras plantas. A espécie mais conhecida destas plantas é a Dicksonia sellowiana, da família das dicksoniáceas, nativa da Mata Atlântica e América Central (especialmente dos estados de Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul, no Brasil). O xaxim também é conhecido pelos nomes de samambaiaçu, sambambaiaçu[1] e samambaiaçu-imperial. Devido a sua beleza, praticidade e diferenciais a exploração do seu caule para fabricação de vasos se tornou bastante comum, bem como sua utilização em projetos de jardins e construções. O modismo do uso do xaxim, como suporte para orquídeas e bromélias, também surgiu por ser muito mais barato do que um vaso de barro.
Essas atividades levaram o xaxim a entrar na lista das espécies ameaçadas de extinção do Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis (Ibama). Isso porque, além da exploração desenfreada, ao retirar a planta de seu habitat natural e plantar em lugares inadequados, ela morre rapidamente, diminuindo a população da espécie e aumentando o risco de seu desaparecimento. |
