GOVERNOR GEORGE CLINTON From the painting by JOHN TRUMBULL, the property of the City of New York, in the exhibition of Early American Paintings at the Brooklyn Museum. and died in London. In 1763, at twenty-one, he sailedfrom New York and after a tour on the continent, wentto England. The classic revival which was spreading overEurope greatly influenced West and he began his longcareer as an historical painter shortly after his arrival inLondon. He painted a succession of pictures from Romanand Greek history, and one of his early canvases, the De-parture of Regulus—a commission from the King—estab-lished his reputation, and during his long life he literallypoured forth large canvases on historical, mythological andbiblical subjects, said to exceed three thousand in number.Upon the death of Sir Joshua Reynolds he was chosen Presi-dent of the Royal Academy in 1792. An example of hisportraiture was shown in that of Dr. Enoch Edwards, adistinguished American friend, which was painted
