Title |
Brooch fragment - bow only |
||
Description |
English: Roman brooch; Fragment of a small, cast copper alloy T-shaped or Hod Hill type brooch, dated to the 1st century. The fragment consists of the bow of the brooch, with the pin and catchplate missing. It is not clear whether the brooch originally had wings or an extended foot but, if so, these are also now missing. The bow flares at the top and tapers to a rounded point at the bottom, although the sides of the bow run parallel for most of its length. The bow is decorated with a central ridge in relief running to the point at which it starts to taper to the bottom. At this point there is a horizontal line and the bottom section seems to be undecorated. The whole is very worn.
Length 25.07mm, width (top) 10.64mm, width (bow) 7.23mm, thickness (top with pin) 7.09mm, thickness (bow) 2.49mm, weight 2.39g Ref: Compare Hattatt, page 304, figure 163, brooch 1520 and page 320, figure 179, brooches 49, 313 and 312, for example. |
