Title
Brooch (from front)
Description
English: The upper fragment of a copper alloy Roman bow brooch of Polden Hill Type and dating to the 1st century AD. The brooch is represented by the head and the incomplete spring. The spring was secured by a Polden Hill claw type mechanism with an iron axis bar. The wings are plain, except for the expanded terminals and are angled slightly to the rear of the brooch. The head widens slightly around the wings. The bow is comparatively slight, with a D-shaped section. The upper bow is decorated with moulded ornament consisting of a raised central rib, which is incorporated into the claw at the head and has tight incised diagonal markings, reminiscent of thread. Either side of the central rib are diagonal mouldings forming a zigzag. Beneath this is a lentoid moulding on each side of the rib.
