Title
Brooch
Description
English: Date: 13th - 14th century

Description: Medieval cast silver brooch, complete with pin attached. The brooch is annular in form, it is decorated on one side with a series of constrictions along the frame. The pin also has small constrictions for decoration. The wider end of the pin is wrapped around a deep constriction on the frame, thus attaching it to the frame. The point of the pin rests within a small, deep constriction on the opposite side of the frame. The underside of both the frame and the pin are undecorated. Discussion: A similarly decorated brooch, but made of gunmetal, is illustrated in 'Medieval Dress Accessories' by Egan and Pritchard, p 249-250, no 1311. The decorative constrictions on this brooch are thought to purposely divide it into faceted fields. It is possible that both brooches were decorated in this fashion in order to improve the appearance by reflecting the light, in a similar way that gems are often faceted for the same purpose. The brooch illustrated in Egan and Pritchard is from an archaeological context dated from c.1270 -1350 AD. Being complete, with the pin still remaining, the West Ogwell brooch is a fine example of its type. Due to its age and precious metal content of 2010 T802, this item would qualify as treasure under the Treasure Act 1997.
