2 - Lararium Statuettes The finds discovered in the Lararium of the Villa od Cneus Domitius Auctus on the outskirts of Pompeii included a statuette of Isis Panthea, which combines the attributes of Isis Hathor - the modius worn on the head behind the crown with a solar disc amidst feathers and a crescent moon - Fortuna's rudder, and Ceres' ears of wheat, a stauette of the nude Venus beside a dove, and the statuette of a coiled serpent with its mouth open, divinity of good fortune and symbol of the genius loci. There was also a statuette of a bull and a crescent moon. 1st Century AD, Scafati, Spinelli district, silver. 3 - Harpocrates The sitting Harpocrates has a lotus flower on his head, a finger beneath his chin, and the bulla typical of Roman boys, he holds a cornucopia, symbol of abundance. 1st Century AD. 4 - Harpocrates In the very small pendant, Harpocrates has wings like Eorii and is accompanied by numerous attributes - the crescent moon, the cornucopia, the snake coiled round a trunk - a hawk, a turtle, and a dog. 1st Century AD. 7 - Serapis The god held a sceptre in his left hand, and is his right hand, another attribute, perhaps a thunderbolt. He had a modius on his head, as indicated by the thick hair on his head, a detail that combined with his thick hair and beard premits us to recognise him as Serapis acording to the iconography the sculptor Bryaxis formulated for Ptolemy I in the 4th Century BC. Worshipped as the god of fertility and of the kingdom of the dead, his cult spread even outside Egypt and lasted until late antiquity. |
