Title |
Bronze Age axe tip |
||
Description |
English: Bronze Age axe; fragment of the blade of a cast copper alloy axe. As this is the tip only, it is very difficult to be certain of the original shape of the axe and therefore of the dating. However, the proportions of the blade, the curvature of the outer sides of the cutting edge and the manner of the tapering towards the cutting edge indicate that it is most likely from a late flat axe or a palstave. I therefore give a tentative dating of the period of the second millennium BC (2000 – 1000 BC). The metal is somewhat pitted and rough with little of the original surface remaining. There is some evidence of powdery, pale green copper corrosion.
Length (apex of cutting edge to back of break) 28.4mm, width (across cutting edge) 54.5mm, thickness 11.4mm, weight 47.20g |
