Title
Bronze Age axe; blade tip fragment
Description
English: Bronze Age axe; fragment of cast copper alloy axe blade of probable middle Bronze Age date (c.1500 – 1200 BC). The fragment is the blade end of the axe. The cutting edge is very worn and uneven in shape, suggesting much use. The blade thickens quite quickly beyond the cutting edge and has a central raised rib on both faces, giving a roughly lozenge-shaped cross-section. The whole has an even, tactile, pale grey-green patina.

It seems likely that this is a fragment of a palstave axe, rather than the earlier flat axes or later socketed axes. Flat axes do not generally have a raised mid-rib and if it was a fragment of socketed axe we would expect to see the bottom of the socket at the break, since this is the point at which socketed axes are weakest and therefore the point at which they most commonly break. However, even with the interpretation of a palstave, this is an unusual piece since the mid-rib is exceptionally large and close to the cutting edge.
