Title |
Bronze Age Flat Axehead |
||
Description |
English: A complete Early Bronze Age cast copper alloy thin-butted flat axehead. The body of the axe flares out into a crescent-shaped blade, although the cutting edge has been lost due to corrosion. The butt (33.84mm in width) curves slightly, but is also corroded. The axe shows some pitting on each surface but it is otherwise in good condition, with a rich greenish-brown patina. The body thickens in the middle so that the shaft sides have an elongated diamond shape, each with a longitudinal ridge in the centre. Another very slight ridge can be seen across the centre of the object, at its thickest point, and another curves parallel to the blade. The axehead is similar to one in the collection of Salisbury Museum, which falls into the Migdale-Marnoch tradition. |
