Title
Bronze Age : Pendant Illustration by Dom Andrews
Description
English: Treasure case 2006 T263: acquired by the British Museum

A rare gold pendant, dating to the Mid-late Bronze Age.

Biconical hollow pendant made from coiled, narrow, lightly C-sectioned gold strip. An eyelet for suspension is placed centrally at the thickest part; this comprises a four-strip loop made integrally with the pendant. One of the tapered ends is missing.

Maximum surviving length 30mm; maximum thickness 8mm; depth at maximum thickness including loop 10.5mm; weight 3.32 grams (plugged with soil).

Identification Two analogues are currently known, both recent. The first is from a Middle Bronze Age hoard (circa 1300-1100 BC) from Burton, Wrexham (Treasure Case 04.2-Wales; awaiting publication in the Treasure Annual Report for 2004). The second is from near Arundel, Sussex (2005/T421), PAS database number: SUSS-4C1150, a single find. The secure association from Burton provides a chronological context for the two single finds.

In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
