Summary
[edit]DescriptionBroadway Temple United Methodist Church.jpg |
English: The Broadway Temple United Methodist Church, located at 4111 Broadway between West 173rd and 174th Street in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was built in 1952 and was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon. Originally, Rev. Christian F. Reisner, pastor of the Chelsea Methodist Episcopal Church, had planned that the temple would be a "skyscraper church" with a revolving electric cross, a 1200-seat auditorium, a pool, gymnasium, and over 400 hotel rooms and apartments, bookended by the two 12-story apartment buildings to the north and the south. Reisner's scheme was provoked by the congregation, which was founded in 1843, learning that their church at Fort Washington Avenue and West 178th Street would be razed to make way for the George Washington Bridge. Architect Donn Barber designed the proposed church, which was unveiled in 1923. The two apartment buildings opened in 1927, and a social hall, gymnasium and bowling alley were also constructed as well. (Source: From Abyssinian to Zion (2010)) |
