[edit]DescriptionBritish Museum (53537172338).jpg | Marble tombstone with carved and incised Arabic inscriptions; one of four now in different collections that originally made up a cenotaph that was subsequently taken apart and the backs incised; 1) outer face carved in the 9th century, bearing the beginning of the basmala ' In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate' writen in kufic script; 2) back incised in the 10th century, with a funerary inscription in a simpler form of kufic script, ' In the name of God the Merciful, the Compassionate, this is the tomb of Muhammad ibn Fatik Ashumi who died in the month of Jumada II in the year 356 (AD 967). God is our sufficiency.'; Ashmuni indicates that the deceased came from Ashmunein, in the Nile Delta. |
