Description

1955 Armstrong Siddeley 346 Sapphire

In 1919 the Armstrong Whitworth Development Company took over the Siddeley Deasy Company and Armstrong Siddeley Motors Ltd was formed. Their first cars set the standard for the Armstrong Siddeley marque – solidly built, dependable and comfortable. They also introduced the Armstrong Siddeley trademark – the V-shaped radiator topped with the Sphinx mascot.

After the Second World War, Armstrong Siddeley was one of the first manufacturers to announce a new vehicle programme. Like many Armstrong Siddeley models before it, the Sapphire, introduced in 1952 is a big, traditional saloon.

Comfortably appointed with Connolly leather inside, options included power assisted steering and a preselector or automatic gearbox, although this particular car is interestingly fitted with a manual gearbox.

During the late 1950s Armstrong Siddeley found it increasingly difficult to compete with other luxury car makers, such as Jaguar. The last of its cars emerged from the Coventry factory in 1960 and the company was left to concentrate on its aircraft business.
