Description

1962 Mini 'Twini' Moke Twin-engine Prototype

The standard Mini Moke was a simple and rugged machine using the front wheel drive and suspension of the standard Mini. It had been designed to suit the requirements of British military forces for a light four-person carrier that could easily be transported by air. The Moke was also available to the public as a fun, yet hard wearing vehicle.

In order to explore the cross-country potential of the Moke, a twin engine version with four-wheel drive was built in 1962. The rear engine was mounted in a Mini front sub-frame with the steering locked in the straight ahead position. There were two gear changes, the normal one and a right-hand mounted lever from the rear engine, although the same clutch hydraulics served both transmissions. It was possible, but perhaps not desirable, for a different gear to be engaged at each end of the car.

The twin engine idea was soon abandoned because it was found that the cost and complication outweighed the traction benefits and payload area was drastically reduced. Though the car was demonstrated to the Press in the severe winter of 1963, it was never manufactured.
