Description

1947 Nuffield 'Gutty' Quarter-tonne Military Prototype

At the end of the Second World War, the war office together with the Fighting Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (FVRDE) began to plan for a standardised range of British-built military vehicles. The smallest vehicle in the range was to be a quarter-tonne, four wheel drive, utility car to replace the huge number of American Jeeps that returned to the USA after the War.

The contract was awarded to Morris and the work undertaken by its Birmingham based military and munitions division, Nuffield Mechanizations Limited. The design team included one Alex Issigonis and also Charles 'Rex' Sewell from the FVRDE.

Two full-scale mock-ups were completed by the end of 1945 and during 1946/7, three working prototypes were produced, known as the 'Gutty'. This is the only survivor. It was quite a departure from the Jeep – with monocoque construction and clever torsion bar independent suspension. The brief called for a Rolls-Royce B40 engine but, as none was available, an experimental flat-four 1800cc engine was installed, a larger version of one that Issigonis was considering for the Morris Minor. Other interesting features included two sets of brake and clutch pedals, so the steering could be easily swapped over to give either left or right-hand drive.
