Title
English: These Two Coins Are Supposed to Be British
Description
English: A depiction of the reverse of a bronze coin of Cunobelinus from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of Essex, sold separately and as Map 20 in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales...

The illustration derives from figure 1 of Tabula I Nummi Britannici on Page 87 of William Camden's Britannia, Vol. I. Its note state "The first is Cunobeline's, who flourished under Augustus and Tiberius; upon which (if I mistake not) are engraven the heads of a two-faced Janus; possibly, because at that time Britain begun to be a little refined from its barbarity. For Janus is said to have first changed barbarity into good breeding; and for that reason, to be painted with two faces, as if he had hammered the same visage into quite another thing." The design is now classified as ABC 2981 (1). Its Janiform head is sometimes considered to have simply been repeatedly copied by the Celts from earlier Macedonian designs showing Zeus with a doubled head (2).

Notes: London: Sold by H. Moll over-against Devereux-Court in the Strand; Tho. Bowles, Print and Map-Seller near the Chapter-House in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and J. Bowles Print and Map-Seller over-against Stocks-Market. 1724.
