Description
English: British Canals in Wartime- Transport in Britain, 1944
Sister Ward bandages the arm of Violet Wise, daughter of a canal boatman, at a first aid post at Stoke Bruerne on the Grand Union Canal. The original caption states that Sister Ward grew up in a house on the canal bank and, after serving in Paris and Brussels during the First World War, returned to Stoke Bruerne and established a clinic for boat families, who, due to the nature of their work have no access to schools, clinics and doctors. The original caption states that the "Grand Union Canal Company now pay her a retainer for this work. Boat people who are ill or have had accidents call on her for treatment and advice on their way up or down the canal". Violet had crushed her arm between the canal boat and 'butty' (the second boat which is towed behind the first) as they entered a lock. A notice in the background states that this is the 'Pride of the Valley' first aid post.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
