Holzschnitt aus:

Jost Amman (1539–1591): Eygentliche Beschreibung aller Stände auff Erden hoher und nidriger, geistlicher und weltlicher, aller Künsten, Handwerken und Händeln ... (erstmals Frankfurt am Main 1568; auch bekannt als: Das Ständebuch)

Im Buch wird das Bild von folgendem Text von Hans Sachs begleitet:

Ein Brieffmaler bin aber ich,
Mit dem Pensel so nehr ich mich,
Anstreich die bildwerck so da stehnd,
Auff Papyr oder Pergament,
Mit farben, und verhöchs mit gold,
Den Patronen bin ich nit hold,
Darmit man schlechte arbeit macht,
Darvon auch gringen lohn empfacht.
(Anmerkungen: Brieffmaler = Illustrator; verhöchs = veredele es; Patronen = Schablonen, empfacht = empfängt)
