Title
Bridle Cheekpiece from Crowle
Description
English: Copper alloy and Iron

Probable Bridle Fitting or cheek piece. Cast copper alloy terminal sheathing a corroded iron object. A ball terminal is separated from a round shank by two deep grooves. Below these, the copper alloy sheath is indented or split; its further extent is masked by ferrous corrosion. The object has a vaguely phallic appearance, possibly the fortuitous result of its partial survival. The sheathing of iron horse gear with copper alloy, for both decoration and to retard corrosion of the iron elements, is known from later Iron Age contexts and continued into the Roman period. The form here appears Classicised rather than Celtic. Suggested date: Early Roman, 40-200.

Length: 45mm, Width: 18mm, Thickness: 10.7mm, Weight: 17.09gms.
