Nasca, Peru 200 BC - 800 AD Ceramic Folch Collection

One of the most common motifs of Nasca ceramics is that of trophy heads. They represent heads with open or closed eyes, and often show mouths kept shut with cactus needles. Trophy head worship went beyond iconography because, archaeologically, real trophy heads have been documented. In these cases, they feature a hole in the middle of the forehead, through which a twine was passed so that they could be carried at the waist.
