RODIS (Rhodes) - from Bernhard von Breydenbach's Peregrinationes in Terram Sanctam (Journey to the Holy Land) - Drach's 3rd latin edition, Speyer 1502
Deutsch: Vedute der Stadt Rhodos mit dem Mandraki-Hafen aus Bernhard von Breydenbachs "Reisebeschreibung ins Heilige Land". Der Titel steht mittig als Banner auf der Stadtmauer.
Mittig unten am Ende der Mole steht die Festung St.-Nikolaus (Beschriftet: "Turris Sci. Nicolai"). An den Festungsanlagen (auch der des Großmeisterpalasts) sind die Beschädigungen durch die türkische Belagerung von 1480 erkennbar. Links unten im Vordergrund ist eine venezianische Handelsgaleere dargestellt, welche überlicherweise auch als Sammeltransporter für Pilgerreisende verwendet wurden. Dasselbe Bild wird einige Jahre später auch nochmal in einem Holzschnitt der Baseler Edition des Kolumbusbriefs kopiert, um als Illustration der Landung Kolumbus' in der neuen Welt zu dienen. Die Details wurden dort fast vollständig übernommen - inklusive des venezianischen Wappens mit dem Markuslöwen an der Markise. Das Jerusalemkreuz auf der Fahne am Bug wurde jedoch weggelassen. Die Vedute diente als Vorlage für die Darstellung von Rhodos in der Schedelschen Weltchronik von 1493. |
