English: Breakwater, Wdig/Goodwick The breakwater stretches 2500 feet out into the bay, curving round to the north as if to echo the jutting headland of Dinas Island in the distance.
It was constructed as part of the creation of a deep-water harbour that was designed to attract ocean-going liners around the turn of the century but Cunard used it only between 1909 and 1914. Update. A local historian has pointed out: The information on the breakwater is incorrect, it had nothing to do with the transatlantic trade as suggested, there was no water deep enough inside the harbour to accommodate the big liners. The plan for this breakwater was for BP oil tankers to bring Persian oil into Fishguard a pipe line was intended to Manorowen where it was intended to build an oil refinery. As always happens in Fishguard this scheme was a pipe dream, BP transferred all oil refining to Llandarcy near Swansea. |
