Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Brasted Village Sign On the village Green at the junction of the A25 Brasted High Street (in front) and Rectory Lane (on the left). In the background is the Old Manor House.

On the post is a plaque which reads 'A mediaeval archbishop of Canterbury stands in the "Garden" of Brasted in the attitude of blessing. Because in AD 773 the manor was given by Offa, King of Mercia to the Friary of Christchurch Canterbury under which it remained until the conquest and soon after William I's death it passed to the Clare Family, Who held it of the Archbishop of Canterbury 'in grand sergeantry' The Connection with Canterbury still continues, because Brasted, Sundridge and Chevening are known as "the Archbishop's Garden" and their livings remain in his gift. Brasted Church is depicted here as well as the River Darent and its bridges; the North Downs form a background with the Pilgrim's Way below them. Leading to the distant towers of Canterbury. The shield of Arms surrounded by the Ribbon of the Garter is that of the 7th Earl Stanhope K.G. Lord of the Manor of Brasted in 1951. This sign was designed and painted by G. Andrew McShane

and restored by Antique Restorations, Brasted 1991'
