Summary
[edit]DescriptionBrand new Geograph-02 - geograph.org.uk - 997465.jpg |
English: Brand new Geograph-02 Close-up view of the new sign. It is based up the cod-armorial crest which was applied to items of crested china which were sold in a local shop around the end of WW1. In particular, the sign was worked up from a photograph I took of a china model of a tank which a parishioner I was visiting showed to me. Another parishioner remembered it when local Councillors were seeking suggestions for the design of the proposed sign.
The supporting figures depict a collier (left) and one of the many 'pit brew lasses'who worked at the local pits. The pits dominate the subject matter of the shield - with colliery winding gear in the top half and the miner's tackle in the left-hand lower quarter. Clogs, in the right-hand lower quarter, were the everyday footwear of mill girls, colliers, and most others. A major local business was the manufacture of railway waggons, as the truck above the crest signifies. The other major local industry was the railways, which the line of coal trucks in front of the colliery workings might signify. |
