| Notes | Wooden stationery box, inlaid with New Zealand woods, with original key made by German Prisoner of War (Alien intern) on Somes Island description- Paper label inset inside lid with drawings of Maori artifacts and scene - "ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE KRIEGSGEFANGENSCHAFT 1914 1915 SOMES ISLAND NEW ZEALAND" also marked on bottom right side- 'RINALDO' Somes Island was used as an internment camp for enemy aliens during WW1. Among those interned here was Joseph Zahn Ribaldo, a 33 year old Austrian born entertainer (and a married man) working in Wellington. At the end of the war it was proposed to repatriate German aliens to their home countries. Many rejected this and some asked to stay in New Zealand. Joseph Rinaldo requested permission to go to Australia and in December 1919 he was advised that he would remain interned until he could be sent to Australia. He later became known in Australia as a vaudeville and circus stuntman. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
