English: Princess Mary Gift box, 1914, WW1 (empty) brass tin with a double-skinned hinged lid; surface of lid depicts head of Princess Mary in the centre surrounded by a laurel wreath and flanked either side by monogram "M"; at top a decorative cartouche contains the words 'IMPERIUM BRITANNICUM' with a sword and scabbard on either side; at the lower edge a decorative cartouche contains the words 'CHRISTMAS 1914' flanked by the bows of battleships forging through a heavy sea; in the corners are small roundels with the names of allies- 'BELGIUM - JAPAN - MONTENEGRO - SERVIA'; and on either side roundels with 'FRANCE' and 'RUSSIA' superimposed on three furled flags or standards; |
