Description |
English: Bowl, punch, delftware, with "Success to the Whalley 1766" as an motif near the illustration of the ship. "Blue bowl bluish glaze, Chinoisserie scenes outside, inside privateer with inscription "Success for the Walley-1766". Diaper petal border in Chinese style." At card, attached, the description of other bowl with same decoration, from an auction catalogue (19.05.1960) The Liverpool potteries were established to make blue and white wares like those at Bristol and Lambeth in London. By 1760 there were at least twelve factories, mostly engaged in making export wares for the colonies. A speciality was made of very large punch bowls, often painted with merchant ships on the interior, to wish them well on their journey. On the exterior is a scene in the Chinese style. |
