Title
Bow brooch (front)
Description
English: Roman copper alloy bow brooch of an unusual type, probably a Hod Hill variant of 1st or 2nd century AD date. The brooch is comparatively small and is now in two pieces. The brooch employed a twin lug hinge mechanism. The front of the upper bow is plain except for a horizontal moulding above and beneath the position of the hinge. The bow opens out to a rectangular panel, decorated with a beaded border containing two linear vertical beaded lines, either side of a decorative panel containing irregular-shaped cells, possibly intended for enamel. Beneath the panel the lower bow has broken, but would have curved inwards before a hooked foot. The lower bow mirrors the upper with two mouldings either side of the catch plate.
