Bow brooch (front) |
||
Description |
English: Roman copper alloy Trumpet bow brooch of 1st – 2nd century AD date. The brooch is comparatively small with a large decorative button on the head, with the remnants of a now broken chain loop emerging from each side. The brooch had a spring mechanism, which is now missing, and was attached by a singly pierced lug with an iron axis bar. The circular trumpet head is decorated with a moulded ring and raised dot each side of he bow. The upper bow is of circular cross section and has a series of slightly diverging lateral mouldings, ending in a knop at the sides. The decorative arrangement together with the moulded ring and dot may have intended to represent a stylised zoomorphic design. The lower part of the bow has a D-shaped cross section and has a series of slight vertical mouldings. The catch-plate is small and the foot has circular mouldings terminating in a knop. A small area of silvering or tinning survives at the rear of the button. |
