Title
Bow brooch (front)
Description
English: Roman copper alloy Trumpet bow brooch, of 1st – 2nd century AD date. The brooch is complete except for the missing pin and the top of the chain loop. The spring mechanism employs lateral lugs each side of an open spring. The remnants of the chain loop are placed on a rectangular panel with central moulding. The circular trumpet head has a small knop on each side, with further small knops each side of the bow at the same level. The top of the bow has a circular cross section and is decorated with three incised near-vertical lines. The mid area of the bow is decorated with prominent high circular mouldings. The lower area of the bow has a sub-triangular cross section and is decorated with three kops on each side. The foot is defined by a trilobed terminal before a slight tapering point. Some evidence of silvering or tinning survives on the surface.
