Title
Bow Brooch
Description
English: Roman copper alloy bow brooch of T-shaped or Headstud type and 1st or 2nd century date The brooch is incomplete and is represented by the head only (with a surviving length of 17.1mm and a weight of 10.7g). The hinge of the pin survives and is secured within tubular wings (with an eroded width of 26.4mm). The wings are of D-shaped section with the flat front carrying cast ribbed decoration. The remnants of a chain-loop are present on the head. The bow is of sub-rectangular section near the head (12.3mm x 3.5mm) with a central vertical rib (7.2mm long, 4.1mm wide 1.7mm high). The sides of the bow are straight and converge towards the break (where the bow has a width of 8.6mm). The bow has broken through a perforation (4.9mm diameter) with bevelled edges. The perforation may have contained a decorative substance such as enamel or secured a head-stud. The surface has a dark-green patina where it survives.
