Title
Bow Brooch
Description
English: Roman copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Part 3, Group 4.d, flat wing ends type), dating to the late 1st -early 2nd century AD The brooch is near-complete, missing only the pin, with a length of 58.6mm and a weight of 12.3g. The iron spring mechanism is secured by a Polden Hill type arrangement (with terminal perforated lugs) and the chord is anchored with a claw. The wings have a width of 22.3mm and were decorated near the terminals with vertical incised lines. The bow has a width of 9.0mm at the head and is of D-shaped section. The sides of the bow are straight and converge towards the simple pointed foot. The bow gradually becomes thicker towards the catch-plate. The front of the bow is decorated with a central, incised triangular panel emanating from the claw at the head. The panel contains horizontal incised marks. The surface of the brooch appears to be poorly-preserved with a pale green to brown colour and has recently been coated in a wax.
