Title |
Bow Brooch, showing pin and chain |
||
Description |
English: Late Iron Age copper alloy bow brooch of La Tène III Type and dating to the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The brooch is one-piece and is complete, with an additional swivelling chain loop and some of the chain. The brooch has a height of 63.8mm. The pin and spring are of circular section with a maximum diameter of 2.7mm. The spring has four loops (with a width at the head of 12.5mm) and has an internal chord. The upper bow is of rectangular section (7.5 x 2.6mm) and has a near right angled turn. The upper bow is decorated with a central rib which continues into the spring gear. Either side of the central rib are shallow rounded grooves and side ribs. The sides converge slightly towards the delicate circular sectioned (5.6mm) button. The leg has a rounded back and a pointed face (sub-triangular Section). The sides of the leg converge to a delicate rounded knobbed foot. The catch-plate is openwork with an internal single step motif remaining. The catch-plate is damaged and broken at the top and step. The catch-plate ends before the foot.
The swivel chain loop is made from 1mm width wire with looped terminals around an oval chain link (4 x 3mm). The second link is also attached to two links, suggesting the brooches may have been joined by two chains of different lengths. Only two links survive from this chain, while 12 links survive on the longer chain, with a length of 37mm. The brooch and chain weigh 12.4g. The brooch is in good condition with patches of dark patination and areas where the metal has retained its bronze colour.The brooch is difficult to parallel closely, but elements of the design are familiar on various examples of La Tène III brooches. |
