Summary
[edit]DescriptionBottleneck on the B519 - geograph.org.uk - 53762.jpg |
English: Bottleneck on the B519. This constriction in the B519 is where Hampstead Lane becomes Spaniards Road. It is caused by a 400 year old Inn and one of its outbuildings. The Inn named after a pair of its former proprietors who killed each other in a duel not only gives its name to the road, it is named on the old inch to mile and the 1:50,000 series O.S maps. I wonder if a cartographer had a particularly good lunch when doing the original survey? The Spaniards is reputedly the Birthplace of Dick Turpin, it gets an honourable mention in the Pickwick Papers and Bram Stokers Dracula. It has had many notable regulars including John Constable, Keats and William Blake. |
