Summary
[edit]DescriptionBotolphs Church - geograph.org.uk - 633944.jpg |
English: Botolphs Church. Originally built in Saxon times but refurbished throughout the medieval period particularly as both the tower and north aisle were added in the 13th century. Originally known as 'St. Peter de Vetere Ponte' as the houses around the church were then known as the settlement of Old Bridge on account of being near an ancient crossing point of the Adur. The settlement had wharves and lived well off the trade on the river as well as from those crossing it and sometime in the early 14th century it was rededicated to St Botolph the patron saint of travellers. However, the river silted bringing ruin to nearby Bramber, depopulation to the old settlement of Old Bridge and the church isolated causing the removal of the north aisle whose infill can be viewed in the picture. Sometime during the 15th century the settlement around the church and at nearby Annington began to be known as Botolphs after the name of the parish so that by the 16th century the two were indistinguishable and the name Annington was relegated to the names of nearby farms in the now village of Botolphs.
The buildings to the left of the church in the distance are 633822 |
